Climate Change: It's bad and getting worse
The rate of ice loss in two of Greenland's largest glaciers has increased so much in the last 10 years that the amount of melted water would be enough to completely fill Lake Erie, one of the five Great Lakes in North America.

West Texas is currently undergoing its worst drought since the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, leaving wheat and cotton crops in the state in an extremely dire situation due to lack of soil moisture, as wildfires continue to burn.

Central China recently experienced its worst drought in more than 50 years. Regional authorities have declared more than 1,300 lakes "dead", meaning they are out of use for both irrigation and drinking water supply.

Floods have struck Eastern and Southern China, killing at least 52 and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of thousands, followed by severe flooding that again hit Eastern China, displacing or otherwise affecting five million people.

Meanwhile in Europe, crops in the northwest are suffering the driest weather in decades.

Scientific research confirms that, so far, humankind has raised the Earth's temperature, and the aforementioned events are a sign of what is to come.

"If you had a satellite view of the planet in the summer, there is about 40 per cent less ice in the Arctic than when Apollo 8 [in 1968] first sent back those photos [of Earth]," Bill McKibben, world renowned environmentalist and fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences told Al Jazeera, "Oceans are 30 per cent more acidic than they were 40 years ago. The atmosphere is four per cent more wet than 40 years ago because warm air holds more water than cold air. That means more deluge and downpour in wet areas and more dryness in dry areas. So we're seeing more destructive mega floods and storms, increasing thunderstorms, and increasing lightning strikes."

So far human greenhouse gas emissions have raised the temperature of the planet by one degree Celsius.

"Climatologists tell us unless we get off gas, coal, and oil, that number will be four to five degrees before the end of this century," said McKibben, "If one degree is enough to melt the Arctic, we'd be best not to hit four degrees."

Here we go again.

Sooo.....if the whole solar system heated up by the same relative amount, how does that mean humans are responsible again?

RE: Climate Change: It's bad and getting worse
The problem is that we just can't take the chance on climate change, can we? There are 4 possible scenarios: (muchos simplified!)

1. We change nothing + we had no impact on climate anyway = good times
2. We do something + we were having an impact on climate = good time coz we have saved Earth/postponed our destruction, lol
3. We do something + we had no impact on climate anyway = economic hardship, perhaps
OR
4. We change nothing + we were having an impact on climate = devastation

The result of number 4 really should (in theory) rule out the 'do nothing and hope for the best' scenario, doesn't it?

I, personally, DO think that we are having a huge daily impact on our environment (no one can argue against pollution, chopping down forests, over fishing etc etc) but as for long term climate change in itself, I just don't think we have been having an impact for long enough - yet! That is to say that if we carry on the way we are going it is likely that we would cause long term climate change. However, in the short term... I don't want to take the chance!!

Mother Earth goes thru this over and over, all the time. Its just Humans freaking out, because we are not including in the change. The Cosmos will continue with out us. And we too will continue, in a different form, back to carbon we go.

Yep I will agree with you there Smile But... better to be safe than sorry! Besides, it would be good if we could work a little more in harmony with the Earth. Humans seem to be a rather parasitic force.

I agree the Earth probobly considers us along the lines of a Virus, as much damage as we do. We kill everything around us to survive, trees for shelter, animals for food, not to even mentions mans inhumanity to man.

RE: Climate Change: It's bad and getting worse
"I have been hearing about "solar warming"- the trend of temperatures increasing on all planets in our solar system, not just here on earth. Is there any evidence to support this claim?

Nope. "Solar warming" is a myth -- part of the unfortunate campaign to discredit climate science. I was at a scientific meeting last weekend where part of the program was devoted to global warming. The speakers pointed out the absurdity of the excuses people raise to deny global warming. For example, there have been lots of questions about the reality of warming over the most recent decade, while neglecting the ovewhelming data showing that this decade is far warmer than the Earth was 50 years ago or 100. Another example is the statement we sometimes hear that in April 2009 Arctic sea-ice extent had returned to 1989 levels. This is true for that one month only; pick any other pair of months, or look at annual averages, and you will see a dramatic reduction in Arctic sea ice. These are examples of "cherry picking data" or lying with statistics. The claim about "solar warming" is equally bogus. It is very difficult to measure a meaningful "global" temperature for any planet but Earth. Further, we have precise measurements of solar energy output made from orbit over the past 25 years, and there has been no solar warming. Why would scientists ignore precise direct measurements of the Sun and instead try to substitute uncertain indirect measurements of planet temperatures? It makes no sense no a scientist who looks at the data. But of course these deceptive claims don't come from scientists."

I used to have a lot of respect for Scientists untill I realized most are funded by TPTB. Bad report, no funding. Report that supports "OUR" cause, increase in funding.
Let me give you an Example, Im a farmer. Im sure youve heard " all the honey bees are dying" "whats going to pollenate the Crops" Yes honey bees have issues, they are dying. But this is what your not being told. This year in GA we planted our crops, by the end of March tempertures hit 80 degrees. So what you ask?
Well Tomatoe plants were just 30 days into the ground at that time. I bet no one has ever told you that Tomatoe plants will not pollenate when the temps are over 80 degrees. So right now we have tall lankey plants with 1 or 2 tomatoes on them, where they should have 20-30 on them. Because it got hot to early. 99.3 percent crop failure this year. The local Corn is Burnt up, cotton seedlings dead on the ground, lack of rain. No hay, people are giving horses away because they cant feed them, or putting them down.

RE: Climate Change: It's bad and getting worse
The problem I have with TPTB's fix for global warming is that when they say man is responsible for the recent climate change and potential disastrous climate changes in the future, is that they try to include the average citizens in like we are responsible and should feel guilty. If anything, it's their system of indutrialization, polluting factories, and deforestation that's WAAY more to blame than the fact that I left the hall light on all night last Tuesday.

I have a problem with the way they continue to let these corporations foul up the Earth with toxic materials, pollute our air, then fund Public Service Announcements that tell YOU and I that WE should be ashamed of how WE treated the Earth!

RE: Climate Change: It's bad and getting worse
Its hard to say how I feel about global warming.. I have been inundated with this info since I was in preschool. And a large part of me feels like the information spoon feed to us has more to do with global agenda than global warming. Do we need to take care of our planet?? Heck yes we do! But I find it funny how we are told to do so when TPTB run a muck with it! In my opinion it really all boils down to money...they want a fuel alternative..but what happens if they find one?

Every lie has a bit of truth.....
